New Jersey Consortium for Urban Education (NJCUE)

Application Requirements & Directions

Applicant Requirements: Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements are encouraged to apply to the New Jersey Consortium for Urban Education (NJCUE) for teaching positions in Jersey City, Newark, or Paterson.
  • Math positions: BA or BS in mathematics
  • Science positions: BS in a natural or physical science
  • Special education positions: BA/BS with either a liberal arts major or a concentration in a coherent course of study in liberal arts
  • A 3.0 overall GPA
  • A passing score on the appropriate Praxis II examination(s)(see specific details below)
  • United States citizen or a permanent resident who completed a sworn affidavit to become a United States citizen. (License(s)/certificate(s) are issued only to applicants who are citizens or who have declared their intention to become citizens. A notarized affidavit of intent to become a citizen and a notarized non-citizen oath must be submitted with the application of a non-citizen.)
Applicant Commitments:
  • Participants commit to three years of teaching in the urban district where hired or repay the stipend and tuition
  • Participants do not have a choice in which school district hires them, and must be willing to accept a position in one of the participating school districts· Participants are required to sign a Participant Service Agreement that outlines their obligations to the program
New Deadlines:
  • Completed application form and essay must be submitted online no later than August 1, 2004.
  • If you have already passed your Praxis, send a photocopy with your official transcripts and letters of recommendation, postmarked no later than August 1, 2004:

  • Official Praxis II scores should be sent to the New Jersey Department of Education at institution code 7666.
Praxis II Examination: All applicants must pass the appropriate Praxis II examination (see table below). For information on the Praxis visit The Praxis Series Web site at www.ets.org/praxis. The institutional code for submitting test scores is 7666.

Essay Required: Applicants must submit an essay on the topic described below. Applications will not be reviewed without this essay.

In an essay of 2 - 3 pages, please address the following:
What interests you about the NJCUE program? What experiences, skills,knowledge and dispositions make you particularly suited to teaching in an urban community? In responding to these questions, please be sure to cite the experiences you have had working with children in any teaching or helping relationship such as tutoring, mentoring, coaching, care giving, or camp counseling.
NOTE: If you are applying for the program in Special Education, you must describe your experiences working with children or adults with special needs.

Interviews: Applicants who meet the selection criteria will be invited for an interview as part of the application process. Personal interviews will be held in August of 2004.

Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required. Applicants should request them from someone familiar with their previous academic work, background experiences, and/or work with young people, noting especially their motivation and capacity to succeed. Professors, employers, or other professionals are appropriate choices.

Transcripts: Official transcripts bear the raised seal of the institution and are sent from that institution directly to the Director of NJCUE. One transcript from each college/university attended is required.
*Please note: Transcripts from college/university level studies completed at any foreign institution require a COURSE-BY-COURSE evaluation from one of the credential evaluation agencies accepted by the New Jersey Department of Education. Please visit www.state.nj.us/njded/educators/license/1111.htm for a list of Education Credential Evaluation Services.

Admission Decisions: Only complete applications will be reviewed for admission. Admission decisions are based on an overall review of the required credentials (application form, official transcripts, Praxis score(s), recommendations, essay, and interview). Formal written notice from the Project Director of NJCUE constitutes an offer of admission. Correspondence with a participating school district, institute of higher education or individual does not constitute admission. The Participant Service Agreement must be signed by the applicant and returned to the Project Director of NJCUE to complete admission to the program.
