Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency Program
Montclair State University is pleased to announce the Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency Program (NMUTRP), an apprenticeship-based program of study for individuals with a deep commitment to urban teaching. This Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program has two tracks: P-3/K-5 certification with dual certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities; and secondary, content area certification in mathematics or science.

Program Overview:
The program will begin in January 2010 with the first cohort of students following the MAT in early childhood/elementary education with Teacher of Students with Disabilities. This program lasting three semesters, with additional community work in the summer.
The initial secondary school cohort will start in May 2010 in a program lasting two semesters. Candidates with an undergraduate degree and a major in math or a field of science will follow a two semester curriculum with additional community work in the summer.
Those candidates who successfully completing each program will earn the MAT degree and teacher certification simultaneously.
The NMUTRP offers full Montclair State tuition and fees plus a living stipend of $15,000 each semester that you are taking coursework. Your courses are based in the Newark Public Schools. Summers offer internships with community based organizations in Newark.
The NMUTRP requires a commitment of 3 years teaching in the Newark Public Schools after completing the program. During that time, you will have intensive mentoring to support your development as a teacher.
Eligibility:
You are eligible for admission to the NMUTRP program if you have:
- A deep commitment to urban education
- An undergraduate GPA of 3.0
- Passing scores on all appropriate Praxis exams
- GRE scores
- A completed application package, including the required letters of recommendation, essay, official transcripts of all prior college coursework, and the $60 application fee.
