Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency Program

Program Overview

The program began in January 2010 with the first cohort of students following the MAT in Early Childhood/Elementary (P-3/K-5) Education with Teacher of Students with Disabilities track. This program lasts eighteen months, including course work and community experiences during the summer.

The secondary school cohorts (Mathematics and Science) begin in June of each year and take twelve months to complete, including coursework and community experience in the summer.

The NMUTR offers full Montclair State tuition and fees plus a living stipend of $ 39,000 for the eighteen month program and $ 26,000 for the twelve month program. Additional funds are available to those who qualify through the Federal TEACH grant program.

All MAT courses are based in the Newark Public Schools. Summers offer internships with community based organizations in Newark.

The NMUTR requires a commitment of three years teaching in the Newark Public Schools after completing the program. During that time, candidates will receive intensive mentoring to support their development as teachers.
