Counseling and Educational Leadership
Education and Training
The Department of Counseling and Educational Leadership at Montclair State University offers students the opportunity to take a sequence of graduate courses as required by the New Jersey Department of Education for Substance Awareness Coordinator (SAC). Please note that these courses may either be taken independently of a degree program or applied toward a master of arts in counseling at Montclair State University.
The counseling program also provides courses leading to Certification in Drug and Alcohol Counseling (CADC), which also
can be taken for certification purposes only or as part of a Master's degree. Additional CADC requirements are listed below
and on the Addictions Professionals Certification Board of New Jersey Webpage.
The courses offered in the counseling program are designed to meet the professional development needs
of aspiring SACs or CADCs who wish to receive a Master of Arts degree in counseling with a specialization in
addictions studies. It is important that students carefully follow the specific current requirements as outlined by
the NJ Department of Education regarding the requirements and applications for Substance Awareness Coordinator (SAC) certification.
Sample work programs for students seeking Master's degrees with specializations in addiction studies certification follow.
Courses leading to certification only may be taken independently of a degree program.
