Counseling and Educational Leadership
Ph.D Program in Counselor Education
Montclair State University is accepting applicants for its Ph.D program in Counselor
Education for Fall 2010.
The only doctoral program in counselor education in the
New York metropolitan area, the primary objective of this Ph.D
program is to prepare scholars and practitioners to become leaders in
maximizing the mental health and quality of life for individuals,
families, communities, and educational organizations.
Individuals with counselor education doctoral degrees work as academic
faculty in higher education and in administrative and managerial roles
in health care agencies, nonprofit organizations, community agencies,
and student affairs/academic affairs units in colleges and universities
as well as in businesses. In addition to consultants for agencies on
specific projects-for example, consultants to state departments of
education concerning guidance outreach to underserved populations.
The Montclair State University Ph.D
program in Counselor Education combines scholarly preparation and
advanced counseling and supervision practice in preparation to pursue
these and other career opportunities. Applications are being accepted
for Fall 2010 study. Review of completed applications, including review
for doctoral assistantships, will begin on or about November 1, 2009.
The final application deadline for Fall 2010 is February 1, 2010.
Earn your MA in Educational Leadership in ONE YEAR
while
working full-time!
Courses will be offered through a combination of online, face-to-face
and hybrid models. Applications will be accepted beginning in January,
and the Fast Track Option will start this Summer, 2010. Choose Fall 2010 as application term.
Graduate students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Educational
Leadership seeking to be principals, directors, and school
superintendents will participate in courses and field experiences:
- To help develop and/or support a personal philosophy
of education and social consciousness consistent with related theories
of learning and human development.
- To develop characteristics required for effective
leadership in education.
- To analyze educational organizations and plan
programs and strategies for increasing organizational effectiveness.
- To develop techniques to facilitate interpersonal and
group problem-solving and decision-making.
- To develop skills in managing change and conflict in
educational endeavors.
- To interpret research findings and design and
implement research techniques for their organizational needs.

MA in Counseling Program is Accredited by CACREP
The MA in Counseling graduate
program, located in the College of Education & Human Services,
is accredited by the prestigious Council for the Accreditation of
Counseling
and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). CACREP has established rigorous
standards for the preparation of counselors, and only about 21% of
counseling
graduate degree programs in the United States are accredited by CACREP.
The vision of CACREP is to
provide leadership and to promote excellence in professional
preparation though
the accreditation of counseling and related educational programs.
As an
accrediting body, CACREP is committed to the development of standards
and
procedures that reflect the needs of a dynamic, diverse and complex
society.
CACREP is dedicated to (1) encouraging and promoting the continuing
development
and improvement of preparation programs, and (2) preparing counseling
and
related professionals to provide service consistent with the ideal of
optimal
human development.
The MA in Counseling graduate program at Montclair State University
allows its students to elect a concentration in one of four
areas: Addictions Counseling, Community Counseling, School
Counseling and Student Affairs/Counseling in Higher Education.
The department of Counseling and Educational Leadership also offers
post-baccalaureate and post-master's certification and certificate
