ATEP Medical Director

Research/Interests - Douglas Borkowski, MD is a 1982 graduate of Montclair State University who has returned to provide athletic health care to the athletes at his alma mater. He specializes in Sports Medicine and also has a primary care background. He is the medical director at Doctor’s Express in Paramus, NJ. He also adds his sports medicine expertise to the physician staff at the McInerney Institute several days a week.

Dissertation Title - Prediction of Performance on the NATABOC Exam from GPA and Number of Clinical Hours

Research/Interests - Dr. Middlemas joined the faculty at MSU in 2000 as associate professor and Director of the Athletic Training Education Program. He came to MSU from William Paterson University where he was Program Director. Dr. Middlemas's experience as an athletic training educator includes teaching in both internship and accredited athletic training education programs. His professional experience includes directing the athletic training outreach program for a sports medicine clinic, head collegiate athletic trainer, high school athletic trainer and clinical athletic training. Dr. Middlemas has published in the athletic training literature and given professional presentations in the field. He is a Test Site Administrator and Examiner for the NATABOC, facilitator for NATABOC Examiner Development, an NATA certified Clinical Instructor Educator and has been involved in athletic medical care for NCAA division 3 championships in two sports, and national masters' championships for the Athletics Congress. Employee Image Marsha Grant-Ford, ATC, Ph.D.

Clinical Education Coordinator

Education - B.S.,East Stroudsburg University - Health & Physical Major with Athletic Training/Aquatics Concentration; M.Ed., University of Virginia - Athletic Training/Sports Medicine; Ph.D., Temple University - Kinesiology with Athletic Training Concentration

Dissertation Title - Biomechanical Assessment of a Prophylactic Wrist Orthosis During Mechanical Loading in Cadaveric Model

Research/Interests - Dr. Grant-Ford has had clinical experiences at the secondary school, sport/gymnastic camps, physician practice, professional sports, and all three NCAA division levels. She has educational degrees from three (CAAHEP now CAATE) accredited programs and has taught in five others (including MSU). She was the program director at Rowan University until 2001. Her professional service includes the NATA Educational Task Force, the NATA Ethnic diversity Advisory Council, and EATA District 2 Election Chairperson; in the fall of 2006 she began a term as a member of the NATA Professional Education Committee. Grant-Ford frequently served as a BOC examiner until April of 2007 when the national exam transitioned to a computer based assessment. Dr. Grant-Ford has traveled extensively, nationally and internationally, as an athletic trainer for the United States Olympic Committee and USA Basketball. She was assigned to basketball and gymnastics at the 1996 Olympics and recently served as a staff athletic trainer for the 2001 and 2006 USA Men's and Women's Gymnastics Championships. Employee Image Fredrick A Gardin, Ph.D., ATC

Education - BS, Appalachian State University, Health Education; MAEd, East Carolina University, Health Education; PhD, University of South Carolina, Physical Education and Athletic Training

Research/Interests - Dr. Gardin joins Montclair State University with clinical experiences in secondary schools, youth sports, sport camps, and professional sports. Dr. Gardin has experience as a clinical instructor for variety of schools and is a formally trained educator. Dr. Gardin’s professional involvement includes serving as a district representative in North Carolina and assisting with the planning of the South Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association Student Workshop. Dr. Gardin has published and presented on a variety of topics in the area of socialization of athletic trainers. Dr. Gardin’s research interests include socialization, clinical education, and expertise development in athletic training.

Employee Image John Davis, M.S., ATC

Head Athletic Trainer

Education - B.S., Ursinus College - Health and Physical Education; M.S. East Stroudsburg University - Physical Education with a Biomechanics concentration

Research/Interests - Mr. John Davis has been at the helm of athletic training services for Intercollegiate Athletics at Montclair State University since 1984. In addition to a very full schedule preventing and managing athletic injury and illness for 17 intercollegiate teams as Head Athletic Trainer, Mr. Davis has demonstrated a very strong commitment to the profession. He currently is the President-Elect of the Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association (EATA). He has previously served as the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) District II secretary, EATA Secretary/Treasurer, Northern Representative to the Athletic Trainers' Society of New Jersey, and is a past president of the State organization. He was selected as an athletic trainer to the 1988 International Para Olympic Games. In 2005, he was the first recipient of the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Dr. Donald Grover Memorial Award which is bestowed to an athletic trainer of an ECAC member institution who has achieved outstanding success in his career and made a significant contribution to intercollegiate athletics. Mr. Davis has been inducted into the Athletic Trainers' Society of New Jersey Hall of Fame. Montclair State University honored Mr Davis in 2010 by dedicating its athletic training facility as the John Davis and Dr. M. Benjamin Burton Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Center.

Employee Image Cindy Dormann, ATC, NREMT

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Education - B.S., Montclair State University - Physical Education

Research/Interests - Ms. Dormann has been the assistant athletic trainer at MSU since 1993. Ms. Dormann graduated magna cum laude from MSU in 1992 where she was a two sport athlete. She has since been a clinician in the clinical and secondary school settings as well as with the New Jersey Imperials, a regional soccer league.

Employee Image Joseph M. Savoia, M.S., ATC

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Education - B.A., Kean University - Health and Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training; M.S., Kean University - Exercise Science/Concentration in Exercise Physiology

Research/Interests - Mr. Savoia joined MSU as an assistant athletic trainer in the summer of 2005. Previously, he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Kean University where he received a Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology. Mr. Savoia did extensive graduate research in isokinetics, with a research interest in the relationship between muscle strength and knee pathologies. He has worked in many different settings in the athletic training profession including an undergraduate assignment with the New York Giants Professional Football Club during the 2002-2003 season. Mr. Savoia was also the 2003 recipient of the Richard Malacrea Scholarship Award.
