1. Program Objective
The program's objective is to serve previously certified teachers who are currently teaching health education in a classroom setting and want to continue their education. The courses have been chosen to provide pedagogical and content-based knowledge and skills grounded in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Comprehensive Health. For classroom teachers whose primary focus is not health, as weel as those for whom it is, furthering their knowledge and skill base in health education based on the most current research and theories in the field expands the expertise they share with their students. Additionally, it increases their ability to meet the mandated standards that are part of the state's standardized tests in the elementary, middle and high schools.
2. The Academic Program
The program consists of twelve-credit hours of graduate courses. It can be completed in one year (two semesters).

The Montclair State University helath education faculty teaches these courses.
Admission
To be admitted to the Health Education Certificate Program the applicant must possess (A) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4-point scale or equivalent on a 5-point scale; and (B) a teaching certificate.
All candidates must meet the basic admissions requirements for graduate study at Montclair State University. The completion of a major from an accredited college or university is preferred. Candidates with degrees in closely related areas will be considered, although prematriculation coursework may be required.
***Students who successfully complete the requirements of the certificate program with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and recieve the Sexuality Education Certificate, will be eligible for admission to the Health Education Master's Program without the requirement of taking the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
Deadlines
Credentials are processed as soon as they are received. This program does not have a specific deadline; however the Graduate School recommends that students submit their credentials as far in advance as possible for the semester they plan to begin their studies to ensure a timely review of their application.
Pre-matriculation
The Montclair State University Graduate School accepts applications on a rolling basis for the Health Education Certificate. Individuals who wish to complete the certificate program may take up two of the required courses (6 credits) before applying to the program.
