    • P4C Around the World

    There are countless places around the world where children and adults engage in philosophical inquiry together—a practice at least as old as Socrates. Since 1974 the IAPC at Montclair State University and its Affiliate Centers have been largely responsible for the proliferation of Philosophy for Children programs in schools and other settings around the world. However, today there are numerous approaches to this work, many of which are not derived from the work of the IAPC. The IAPC welcomes this diversity and encourages cooperation among colleagues practicing different approaches, though the IAPC occasionally finds reason to critique particular curricula and pedagogies. The IAPC is a proud member of The International Council of Philosophical Inquiry with Children (ICPIC), a network of philosophers, teachers and institutions interested in engaging children in philosophical inquiry, created in 1985.

    IAPC Affiliate Centers

    There are numerous Philosophy for Children Centers around the world that are formally affiliated with the IAPC—most of which were established through the work of the IAPC. These centers are autonomous though they often collaborate with the IAPC, and maintain contact through the IAPC Associate Director for International Affairs. Many of them have formed regional and national associations. IAPC affiliate centers receive the following kinds of support from the IAPC:
    • Contact information listed on the IAPC website (see below)
    • Creation of a Center website by the IAPC, if the Center does not already have one
    • Publication of accomplishments in The IAPC Newsletter
    • Free subscription to Thinking: The Journal of Philosophy for Children
    • Free back issues of Thinking (not including shipping)
    • Discounts on IAPC Publications
    • Invitations to collaborate with IAPC faculty and staff in projects of research, dissemination, policy change, curriculum development, theory development, grant writing, etc.
    • Consultation on such work by IAPC faculty and staff
    Formal affiliation with the IAPC requires the following:
    • Certification of one or more of the Center staff from one of the following:
    • Engagement in one or more of the following kinds of work:
      • Translation and publication of IAPC Curriculum
      • Engagement with school-age children in philosophical inquiry
      • Preparation of schoolteachers to facilitate philosophical inquiry with students
      • Empirical and theoretical research in Philosophy for Children
      • Development and testing of new curriculum in Philosophy for Children
    • Regular communication with the IAPC regarding such work.
