About the College
Message from the Dean
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the "e-home" of the College
of Education and Human Services at Montclair State University. I encourage you to explore our website
and read about our outstanding faculty, programs, and projects. As you read, you will find out why I
am so proud to be the dean of this College.
Whether you are interested in teaching, nutrition, food management, athletic
training, counseling, educational technology, family and child studies, adult fitness, educational
leadership, literacy education, Philosophy for Children, or corporate training, you will find a
strong program to meet your needs. Most are available at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Montclair State University has a long and illustrious history of preparing highly qualified
teachers for our region's public schools. Our nationally renowned, award winning teacher education
program is grounded in a clear and compelling set of beliefs and standards about what constitutes
good teaching, learning, and schooling. These beliefs and standards are embodied in the Portrait
of a Teacher, which you will find on the Center of Pedagogy web pages. The University's Center of
Pedagogy, which oversees all aspects of teacher education, brings together faculty from education,
the arts and sciences, and the schools to work collaboratively on our Agenda for Education in a Democracy.
The Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal, our school-university partnership with over
20 nearby school districts, is part of the Center of Pedagogy. Our exciting Ed.D. in Pedagogy program, which
offers the capstone degree to teachers who wish to remain in the classroom and become leaders in their school
communities, is housed in the Center of Pedagogy. You will find detailed information about the Center of
Pedagogy and all of its programs and initiatives on its web pages. Information about programs and admissions
to teacher education at Montclair State can be found there and under Teacher Education on our home page.
Every one of our programs is built on a strong liberal arts foundation with special attention to critical
thinking in the context of a professional knowledge base. All of our programs recognize the ethical dimensions of
education and human services professions, and prepare individuals committed to making life better for citizens
in our political and social democracy.
Late in December 2005, we moved into a magnificent new building, University Hall, which is the showplace of our campus.
It is thrilling that we now have a facility that mirrors the excellence of our faculty, staff, programs, and students.
Prominent in the new building is the ADP Center for Teacher Preparation and Learning Technologies, a state of the art
facility that includes classrooms of the future, an instructional technology design laboratory, the Curriculum Resource
Center, and a collaborative teaching laboratory. In September 2005, we moved into our new Children's Center, which united our Child Care Center and Psychoeducational Center into a model program for inclusive early childhood education. This is an exciting time for the College of Education and Human Services!
Please feel free to contact me, Associate Dean Tamara Lucas, Assistant Dean Leslie Jenkins, or one of our departments if you need information beyond what is provided in these pages. I hope you will enjoy exploring our website, and find the information you are seeking. Even more, I hope you will visit us in person to meet our faculty and discuss our programs. Join us at the College of Education and Human Services at Montclair State University and become a part of our outstanding academic community.
