Gerontology Program
The Gerontology Program at Montclair State University seeks to provide students throughout the university with opportunities to learn the many ways
in which people experience elderhood. Through a multidisciplinary program of study, students learn about aging and work with older adults in a variety of
contexts. At a time when close to one out of seven Americans is 65 or older, there is an increasing need for professionals to have both academic preparation
and "real world" experience working in multiple settings with diverse populations of senior citizens and their families. The Gerontology Program, housed in
the Department of Family and Child Studies, coordinates the Gerontology Minor, the Gerontology Certificate and the Family and Child Studies-Gerontology
concentration. The multidisciplinary minor and certificate are appropriate for students from most majors . The Family and Child Studies major with a
Gerontology Concentration is appropriate for students who want to have an in-depth course of study in gerontology and want to have a full time
Cooperative Education/Internship experience in an organizational setting.
These three programs challenge students to think critically about: various aspects related to healthy adult development; the implications of aging well in a
community setting; various adjustments and adaptations to frailty and/or illness; and the "dailiness" of life in a variety of institutional settings.
The gerontology minor, certificate and concentration are distinctive in that they include several service-learning courses which integrate academic coursework
with "hands on" learning opportunities in a variety of local community-based organizations and not-for-profit agencies.
These partner organizations have collaborated with Montclair State University in long-term, sustained collaborations
to increase the quality and quantity of assets and services for older adults in the surrounding community.
