- I am involved in two issues areas for the Service-Learning Program at MSU
1.Issue area on literacy - Each semester my Field Experiences in Family and Child Services classes are partnered with the Montclair Board of Education to support their After School Tutorial Program, which seeks to provide academic enrichment to help reduce the academic achievement gap in elementary school age children. Students learn about social issues, advocacy, organizational structures and the legislative process in order to learn how to effect positive change for families and communities
2.Issue area on aging - Once a year the students in my Challenge of Aging class provides service to more than a dozen local agencies that work with older adults in order to learn about the multiple ways in which people age, the range of services available to elders and their families, the application of theory to practice in community settings, and the many factors that effect aging in America
